Kicked PARCC Test Out of 9th Grade, Focused Budget Debate on Roads and Bridges

Roads and Bridges a Priority "Not a Nickel More Until Budget is Focused"

Debate on supplemental appropriation bills this week provided an opportunity to call the General Assembly and Governor to refocus our efforts on setting financial priorities on the biggest issues of our state budget--like roads and bridges. I say not one nickel more until we prioritize.

Removal of PARCC from 9th Grade

This week the House Education Committee voted unanimously for our bill to kick the PARCC test out of 9th grade. Current legislation requires that each local education provider must administer the PARCC test, a state assessment, to tenth-grade students. This bill repeals the requirement to administer the test to ninth-grade students instead requiring local education providers to administer a state-selected ninth-grade assessment that is better aligned with ninth-grade content standards.

Liberals Block Lundeen Effort to Rescue Students in Failing Schools

We must provide a way out for students stuck in Colorado's failing districts and challenge these districts to raise their standards, not prioritize the establishment at all cost. HB17-1089 would have provided an immediate solution for the twenty-two thousand students currently stuck in chronically low-performing districts across the state. Yet it was clear in committee that the democrats prefer to retain the power in the system that is serving adults while failing children.

Human Trafficking Attention

I am gratified that our anti-human trafficking bill was called out as a key new tool in the fight against human trafficking by both the Human Trafficking Task Force of Southern Colorado and Colorado Attorney General, Cynthia Coffman. The bill, HB17-1040, is well on its way to the Governor's signature.

Cyber School Rally: "I Trust Parents"

"I trust parents" was the rallying cry students and I chanted at the cyber school rally today.  It is true.  Parents know best and have their children's needs in heart as those students move up and through their learning experiences.
